DUNBAR, WIS. - Nicole Wung scored just over three minutes into the second half for Northland International University and the Lakeland College women's soccer team was dealt a 1-0 loss Thursday afternoon.
Wung popped up a shot into an empty net after NIU's Joleanna Paine got to a ball chased outside the box by Muskie goalkeeper Ali Marshall (Fr.-Plymouth, Wis.). Paine centered the ball and Wung found the net before the Lakeland defense could recover and for what turned out to be the only goal of the match.
Lakeland more than doubled up Northland International (4-2 overall) in shots taken, outshooting the Pioneers 23-11, including a 13-6 margin in shots on goal. The Muskies missed a number of great opportunities, though, including several one-on-one opportunities against NIU goalkeeper Rebecca Newton, who made 13 saves for the shutout.
Lakeland had a chance to take the lead midway through the first half when Hannah Landgraf (Sr.-Elkhart Lake, Wis.) received the ball five yards in front of the goal, but her shot was right at Newton and bounced off the side of the keeper's head.
Landgraf also had three one-on-one opportunities to tie the game in the second half against Newton, but the Northland goalkeeper smothered two of the shots and made a leaping save on the third one to preserve the game for the hosts.
Landgraf finished with 11 shots alone, including seven on goal. Kelly Jens (Fr.-Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) added five shots. The Muskies in particular dominated the first half, outshooting the Pioneers 14-4.
Marshall made five saves in goal for Lakeland, which dropped to 3-6 overall on the season. The Muskies return to play Saturday when they travel to face Northern Athletics Conference foe Concordia University Chicago at 1 p.m. in River Forest, Ill.
